Hermione Granger

On Friday the Grade 4 team made a pitch to Grade 4 students to see if they can read 40,000,000 from January to June! We have 100 or so students collectively and the challenge requires each student to strive towards reading 400,000 words. Books, magazines, on-line texts, books in native languages, and anything in between can be counted. We created a reading passport for the students to help tally number of words read and quick reference guides for approximate word counts.

The idea came from the first school district I worked in, Denver Public Schools, and they are credited with the original idea of having each student read 1,000,000 words by the end of the year. We customized the idea and adapted it to our needs at ISB. At the "Launch Party" on Friday Grade 4 teachers dressed as their favorite book character. Some of my colleagues could have there own stand up routines!!! They were great. I had such a fabolous time as Hermione, so much so that I stayed in costume all day! In March we are going to invite the students to do the same and have a favorite character celebration mid-point check in.
